and the insanitary areas there can then be dealt with and the sites used
for further housing.
Netherwood Street area.—The streets comprising this area have
come under review during the year. Special reports were made to the
Committee as to the housing conditions of the inhabitants of Netherwood
Street, Palmerston Road, Kelson Street, and Linstead Street.
It was found, however, that although much crowding existed, the
amount of illegal overcrowding—judging by the standard of cubic
air space required by the bye-laws relating to tenement houses—was
comparatively small, and the Committee did not recommend any
further action.
Frognal sites.—The agents for the owners of "Frognal Hall" and
"Priory Lodge" estates approached the Council in August, stating
that, in view of the very serious housing difficulty, huts might be
erected upon the land. The Housing Committee decided that it was
not desirable to place huts upon this ground, but the owners were
communicated with on the subject of the acquisition of the land for
housing purposes. The price asked for the land, however, was considered
to be so high as to render the site unavailable for housing
purposes.
Lower Cross Road and Lawn Road sites.—The possibility of utilising
sites on land belonging to the Midland Railway Co. at these roads was
also considered. The company having been approached on the matter,
wrote on 1st August, stating that the Council's application to take a
portion of their land had been considered, and stating that they had a
scheme under consideration which would involve the construction of a
third tunnel under the land in question, and that this being so they
were not prepared to agree to any scheme involving the erection of
houses on the land, which to a considerable extent would be affected by
engineering operations when the tunnel was made.
There were also considerable difficulties in the way of the proper
development of the land in Lawn Road, and finally the consideration of
the site was not proceeded with.
"Cholmley Lodge" Site, West Hampstead.—The possibility of
utilising this property as a housing site was considered, and after
receiving a report from the District Valuer, the Committee gave
instructions for the London Housing Board to be approached. The
matter is still under consideration.
