cent. in 1921. The number of births notified by mid wives in 1922 was
51 per cent. of the total, as compared with 57 per cent. in 1921, and 42
per cent. in 1920.

Maternity and Child Welfare.
There were 68 deaths of infants under one year of age in Chelsea
in 1922, equivalent to an Infant Mortality Rate of 66 per 1,000
Births, as compared with 78.5 per 1,000 in 1921, and 52 per 1,000 in
1920, which was the lowest rate ever recorded in the Borough. In London,
in 1922, the rate of infantile mortality was 74, and in England and
Wales, 77.
The number of births of Chelsea infants in outlying institutions in
1922 was 134, or 13 per cent. of the total births, as compared with 12.1
per cent. in 1921. There were 64 births in the Chelsea Workhouse in 1922,
or 6.2 per cent. of the total births, the average of the preceding 14 years
being only 4 per cent.
The following tabular statement gives an outline of the work carried
on in Chelsea during 1922 in Maternity and Child Welfare, the visits being
those paid by the trained officers of the Borough Council (one wholetime
Health Visitor, and one part-time), and of the Chelsea Health
Society and School for Mothers (one whole-time Health Visitor, and one
part-time), and does not include work done by voluntary workers attached
to the Society.
