Hospital Accommodation.
The amount expended in Poor Law relief was £335,562.
The chief institution for gratuitous medical relief is the
Infirmary (828 beds) in Brunswick Square, to which all the more
serious and acute cases are admitted, and which is usually well filled,
4,323 patients having been admitted during the year.
Constance Road Institution (906 beds) and Gordon Road
Institution (867 beds) are used more for the young, the aged and
infirm, and for the chronic cases. King's College Hospital, although
not situated within the Borough boundary, also receives many cases.
St. Thomas's and Guy's also receive a considerable proportion of
sick people.
Closet Accommodation.
So far as closet accommodation goes, little change has to be
reported beyond the fact that in several instances, as the result of
inspections either by our own Inspectors or by those of the Home
Office, additional closets have been provided and older ones brought
up to date. This has not infrequently become necessary as the result
of reversion to ordinary conditions after the war. Questions arose
especially as to the separation of the closets from the rest of the
building: when it was found that conditions existed which would not
be permissible under the by-laws, but were not a strong enough case
to advise the Committee to take action under the Public Health Act.
Scavenging.
A weekly collection is made through the Borough, but in certain
crowded districts, and in some of the large blocks of dwellings, where
