REPORT OF THE PUBLIC ANALYST ON THE ANALYTICAL
WORK OF THE YEAR.
Analytical Laboratory,
Town Hall, Paddington, W.
January, 1918.
During the year 1918 the number of articles analysed under the
Food and Drugs Adulteration Acts was 508. These comprised Milk
171 samples, General Groceries 155, Cereals 47, Butter 48, Margarine
42, Lard 31, Dripping 7, and Cheese 7. Only 12 samples of
Milk and 1 of Mustard proved to be adulterated.
This gives for all articles during the year 2½ per cent. of samples
adulterated; the previous year showed 2.1-10 per cent. of adulterated
articles. That this high standard of purity should have been maintained
during so long a period of limited supply and high prices speaks
well for the honesty of the tradesmen of Hampstead.
I have the honour to remain,
Yours obediently,
ALF. W. STOKES,
Public Analyst.
