1.2 for 1919, the number of deaths being fewer by 22 than in 1919,
and there were also 77 fewer primary notifications as compared
with 1919.
The dispensary treatment of tuberculous persons is carried on
at dispensaries controlled by the Metropolitan and City of London
Hospitals; the Metropolitan Hospital Tuberculosis Dispensary
being financed jointly by the Boroughs of Hackney and Stoke
Newington, and the City of London Hospital Tuberculosis Dispensary
being financed jointly by the Boroughs of Hackney and Bethna
Green.
Reports to the Hospital Committees of Management by the
Dispensary Medical Officers appointed by the hospitals clearly
show the valuable character of the work being carried out by the
dispensaries. Details from the reports and a description of the
dispensary service are set out on pages 41-51.
The Borough is divided for purposes of Sanitary Inspection
into 14 districts, and, in addition, sanction has been obtained for
the appointment of three inspectors for work under the Housing
and Town Planning Act Regulations. Housing difficulties in
Hackney are those common to most London Boroughs, and are by
this time well-known to the public in general. Briefly, much of the
housing property is in poor condition, repairs are expensive, and
in many cases owners are barely able to meet the cost, while owing
to the age of many of the houses frequent repairs are essential.
Alternative accommodation is scanty or lacking, so that Closing
Orders cannot be put into force.
The Council's Housing Scheme is progressing, and temporary
measures have been adopted to alleviate overcrowding : a description
of the scheme can be found on page 71. Particulars with
regard to the comprehensive work of "Sanitary Inspection,"
comprising, as it does, so many and varied services essential to the
health of the community such as inspection with regard to housing
conditions, unsound food and preparation of food, infectious
diseases, drainage work, factories and workshops, outworkers, etc.,
