Report on the sanitary condition of the Metropolitan Borough of Hackney for the year 1920

Diarrhœa.—There was a slight decrease in the number of deaths
due to diarrhœal disease in the Borough during 1920. The total
number of deaths from this cause was 34, and of these 28 were
under 1 year of age. The annual mortality for diarrhoea and
enteritis during the year is 0.15 per 1,000 inhabitants.

The distribution of this disease in the Borough may be seen from the following table:—

Whooping Cough.—The deaths from this cause during the
year numbered 56. This is an increase of 40 upon the number
registered during 1919. No less than 27 of the deaths occurred
in children under five years of age. The mortality for Hackney
is equal to .17 per 1,000 inhabitants, and that for all London, T6 per
1,000 inhabitants. One case was removed to the Metropolitan
Asylums Board's Hospitals.
Information was received from the head masters and head
mistresses of elementary schools in Hackney of 118 cases of
whooping cough occurring among their scholars during the year.
