Report on the sanitary condition of the Hackney District for the year 1916

in the Borough supplying preserved provisions to the War Office.
These consisted of the following:—
Two wholesale preserved meat manufactories.
Two black pudding manufactories.
One potted meat paste manufactory.
One pickle manufactory.
Two sauce manufactories.
One wholesale baker and confectioner.
These were all visited at least once a month during the past year
by Inspector Bobbitt.
Smoke Nuisances.—The Smoke Inspector made 75 observations
of chimneys of factories, workshops, and other places in the Borough
during the year.
Water Supply.—No certificates of proper and sufficient water
supply under section 48 (2) of the Public Health (London) Act,
1891, were applied for during the year.
Bye-laws for Houses Let in Lodgings.—The number of these
houses on the Register at the end of 1916 was 459. Of these 226
were inspected during the year. Any defects found were remedied
on the service of a notice.
CUSTOMS AND INLAND REVENUE ACT, 1890.
One application to make inspection of premises under the above
was made to me during 1916. The premises consisted of two
tenements.
ICE-CREAM VENDORS.
At the end of 1916 there were 172 ice-cream premises in the
Borough, 136 of which were inspected during the year.
