Influenza.—During 1916 there were 30 deaths in the Borough
due to influenza. This is an increase of 6 on the deaths due to this
cause in 1915. The annual mortality rate is.14 per 1,000.
Diarrhoea.—There was a decline in the number of deaths in the
Borough due to this cause during 1916. The total number of deaths
was 78 of which 45 were registered as diarrhoea and 33 as enteritis or
gastro-enteritis, and of the total, 57 were under 1 year of age.
The annual mortality for diarrhoeal disease is .37 per 1,000 living.
CONSTITUTIONAL DISEASES.
Tuberculosis.—During 1916, I received 1,322 notifications of
tuberculosis, details of which are given on page 25 of this report.
Bacteriological examination of sputa from 326 cases was made
during the same period. In 50 of these examinations the specific
organism of the disease was found; in 276 the results were negative.
The number of deaths from tuberculous disease in Hackney during 1916 was 359, a decrease of 22 upon the deaths during 1915. These deaths are classified as follows :—

This number of deaths gives an annual mortality of 1.7 per
1,000 living.
Cancer.—There were 245 deaths during 1916 due to the
different varieties of malignant disease. This is a decrease of
