corrections, there remain 157 illegitimate births amongst Hackney
residents. This is an increase of 35 on the number during 1915.
The illegitimate birth-rate for Hackney during 1916 is 31.2 per
1,000births, that for 1915 was 25.2 per 1,000 births; so that during
last year illegitimacy increased in the Borough to the amount of
23 per cent. on that of 1915.
Deaths.—The deaths registered in the Borough during 1916
numbered 2,917, but of these 617 were deaths of non-residents
dying in institutions and other places in the Borough. There were,
however, 581 residents of Hackney who died, during the year in
institutions in other districts. On making the necessary corrections,
I find the correct number of deaths amongst Hackney
residents during 1916 was 2,881. This is a decrease of 350 upon
the number occurring during 1915. The general death rate from
all causes for the year 1916 is 13.7 per 1,000 of the population.
For the calculation of this rate I have used the Registrar General's
estimated population of 209,636. On further correcting this rate
for age and sex distribution by means of the factor 1.0066, I obtained
the corrected general death-rate of 13.8 per 1,000 of the population
for the year 1916. Compared with the corrected general deathrate
for 1915 that of 1916 is 1.1 per 1,000 lower.
Infantile Mortality.—The deaths under one year of age in the
Borough during 1916 numbered 423. This is a decrease of 97
upon the number of infants deaths recorded during 1915. The
infant mortality rate for the year is 84 per 1,000 births. The
decreased rate is due chiefly to a decrease in the number of
deaths from pneumonia and infantile diarrhoea. Other special
causes of infant deaths deserving mention are premature birth
(70), atrophy, debility and marasmus (75).
