Detailed reference to the preventive measures taken in
connection with the prevention of the spread of tuberculosis is made
on page 26.
I have pleasure in stating that the Officers of the Department
have, on the whole, carried out the duties entrusted to them to my
satisfaction.
Population.—The Registrar-General has thought it desirable to
adopt the following estimates of population for the calculation of
the death rate and birth rate of the Borough of Hackney for the
year 1916, viz.:—
For the death rate 209,636
For the birth rate 228,088
The former is an estimate of the civil population; the latter of
the total population based on the assumption that the ratio between
the total and the civil population is the same in the borough as
in England and Wales as a whole. With a view to approximation
to the population amongst which the births have occurred, the
total population of England and Wales for this purpose has been
calculated by adding to the published estimate for 1914, the
natural increase up to the middle of the year 1916.
Marriages and Marriage Rate.—During 1916 there were 2,206
marriages solemnized in the Borough of Hackney, being a decrease
of 517 on the previous year. The annual rate for persons married
during this period is therefore 21.0 per 1,000 of the population.
Births and Birth-rate.—The births registered in Hackney
during the year 1916 numbered 5,331 of which 2,792 were males
and 2,539 females. The total shows an increase of 204 compared
with the number registered during 1915. This total is the actual
number of births registered in Hackney, but this figure must be
corrected by the proper allocation of transferable births. The
Registrar-General has supplied me with the necessary figures, viz.,
