INFANTILE MORTALITY.
Infant Deaths, 676, Mortality Rate, 72,—There were 676 deaths
among infants under twelve months old during the year, or 61 below the
decennial average (737), and they represented an infant mortality rate of 72
per 1,000 infants born. This rate is 30 per 1,000 births below the mean
annual record of the preceding ten years, and is the lowest infantile mortality
rate ever registered in the Borough. The next lowest occurred in the previous
year when it was 83 per 1,000 births. Again the third quarter, when the rate
is generally very high, only reached the small figure of 43 per 1,000 births.
The mortality in the sub-districts ranged from 41 per 1,000 births in
Tufnell to 89 in Barnsbury.
In London the infant mortality was 75 per 1,000 births, while in the six
boroughs encircling Islington it was 79.
The rate for England and Wales was 80 per 1,000 births.
