Synopsis of the Inspectors work, —The following statement gives a brief synopsis of the district inspector's work in 1918:—

*These inspections were almost entirely dropped during the war.
Notices Served.—There were 1,078 intimation notices served by the
inspectors with respect to nuisances, of which 513 were delivered personally,
and 565 by post. In 200 instances it became necessary, as the intimations
to owners or occupiers of the properties had been ignored, to report the
nuisances to the Public Health Committee, who ordered statutory notices to
be served.
Verminous Premises —Bedding and Clothing.—13 premises which
were found to be in a verminous condition, were cleansed by the owners
or occupiers upon receiving the Inspectors' intimations. In 22 instances it
was necessary to remove the bedding and clothing to the Disinfecting Station
for purification or destruction.
Smoke Nuisances.—Black smoke was observed to be issuing from the
chimney of the undermentioned premises, and consequently a notice was served
on the owner of the following business requiring the abatement of the
nuisance:—
Mayfield Laundry, 93, Gillespie Road.
REMOVAL OF DUST.
Only eleven applications were received during the year for the removal
of dust, which is 19 below the number recorded last year.
The return is the lowest hitherto recorded in the Borough.
