Illegitimate Births.
Illegitimate Births, 289—The number of illegitimate births shows
an increase of 18 as contrasted with 1915, and is below that registered in
1914; it is equal to a rate of 3.98 per cent. of the total births.

The number of births and the percentage of illegitimate births per 100 registered births during each of the preceding years have been as follows:-

Years.No. of Illegitimate Births.Total Births.Illegitimate Births per 100 Registered Births.
19132978,3593.55
19143048,177372
19152717,5373.59
19162897,2623.98

These figures do not indicate that there has been any increase in illegitimacy
since the war began—rather the contrary—and entirely disposes of the
"war babies" scare.
Notification of Births Act, 1907.—6,319 notifications were received
and represent 87 per cent. of the total number of births registered. These are
a decrease of 164 on the return for 1915.

The following table gives the number of births notified under this Act by medical practitioners, certified midwives, and other persons in the several sub-registration districts.
