Report on the sanitary condition of the Borough of Bermondsey for the year 1910

.Death Certification.
There were no uncertified deaths in 1910.
Small-pox.
There were no deaths from this cause in 1910.
Measles.
There were 1-W deaths due to this disease, which is 42 above the average for the last ten
years, and 53 below the number for 190!).
The deaths occurred in quarters as follows, viz.:—3, 2C. 42, (J't.
Diarrhcea.
Table H shows the connection between the meteorological conditions and deaths from this
disease. The second table still emphasises that the most important factor in the prevention of
diarrhoea is undoubtedly breast-feeding. If young children are breast-fed and given reasonable
care, their chances of life are four or five times, and according to some authorities ten times, as
great as children artificially fed, even when this is done under favourable conditions.

Enteric Fever.
4 deaths were due to this cause, 1 in Bermondsey 2 in Rotherhithe, and 1 in St. Olave
The corresponding figures for 1909 were 2 for the Borough, viz., 1 in Bermondsey and 1 in
Rotherhithe.
Other Allied Diseases.
• ) deaths were registered under this heading, viz.. 1 death from chicken-pox and 2 from
cerebrospinal meningitis. An account of the latter will he found in the section of my report
dealing with the notification of that disease.
