PORT OF LONDON SANITARY OFFICES
51, KING WILLIAM STREET,
GREENWICH, S.E.
TO THE WORSHIPFUL THE PORT OF LONDON
SANITARY COMMITTEE.
Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present herewith my Annual Report for the year
ended 31st December, 1909, being the eighth of the series.
The more remarkable events of the year have been the increased amount of
work necessary in connection with Food Inspection under the Unsound Food
and Foreign Meat Regulations, and the additional steps taken by the
Authority to complete the equipment necessary for dealing with the
disinfection of ships under the Local Government Board Regulations relating
to Cholera, Yellow Fever, and Plague.
Careful medical inspection of vessels on arrival has been carried out,
watchfulness being especially required in some cases owing to the presence of
Cholera in Europe.
The sanitary inspection, which is of course supplementary to the medical
inspection, and carried out by the staff of Sanitary Inspectors, has also been
efficiently performed, and in the Tables included in the Report will be found
details, not only of the River inspections, but of the work carried out in
relation to sanitary conveniences and the like, and nuisances, which have for
easy reference been classified.
The Tables relating to infectious disease are of interest, as the year has
shown a reduction in the number of cases met with compared with previous
years.
Food inspection, as previously observed, has received more special attention,
and is fully dealt with on page 45.
With regard to the Staff, there have been no changes, the appointment of
three additional temporary Inspectors was necessary owing to the readjustment
of the districts in connection with the work of food inspection.
My Annual Report on the working of the Canal Boats Acts and
Regulations is as usual appended to this Report ; as also is a Balance
Sheet of Income and Expenditure.
