Mortality among Illegitimate Children.—Forty-five (45) illegitimate children, 12 of whom
were non-residents, died at ages under five years in the Borough last year, one more than
in 1908. Two (2) children belonging to Paddington died outside the Borough, making a
nett total of 35 deaths (7 less than in 1908), 19 of the children being males and 16 females.
Twenty-eight (28) of the children were under one year old. Calculated on the number
of illegitimate births registered locally, last year's illegitimate infantile mortality was at the
rate of 244 per 1,000 births, as compared with 214 in 1908, and a quinquennial mean rate of
246. The corresponding rates for legitimate children are—1909, 99; 1908, 105; and 1904-08,.
112. The fully corrected mortality was 250 per 1,000 births among illegitimate children and
95 among legitimate, the mean rates (1904-08) being 222 and 109 respectively. On the
opposite page will be found particulars as to the mortality rates for the two sexes, occupations
of the mothers, and causes of death.
