partially corrected rate for the five years is reduced from 113 to a residual rate of 80, and the
fully corrected from 109 to a residual of 69. The differences between the rates for 1905 and
last year represent decreases amounting to 13 per cent. in the partially and 14 per cent. in the
fully corrected rates, and 23 and 24 per cent. in the residual, according as Method "A" or "B"
is used.

It will be seen from Table VII., Appendix, that the annual average numbers of deaths at
ages under one year during 1904-08 were—males 216, females 163, no allowances being made
for the diminution in the numbers of births. Last year's deaths—males 165, females 146—
represent savings of 51 male and 17 females' lives, or 68 in all. On grouping the deaths
according to ages (see opposite page) it is found that there were fewer deaths in all groups
save two, viz., 1—3 and 6—9 months (females).
