The changes in the annual rates given in Table 32 are too erratic to permit of any
study of the differences in the mortalities in the Wards. "Index numbers" have, therefore,
been calculated (Table 33) based on the experience of the past five years, during which the
births and deaths have been corrected as fully as possible. The favourable position of
Lancaster Gate, West, Ward is well shown. The contrast between the numbers for that
Ward and Church Ward are striking. The numbers for the two most northern Wards—
Queen's Park and Harrow Road—are surprisingly low, and compare favourably with those
for Hyde Park. Some allowance must, doubtless, be made in the case of the last named
Ward for the small numbers from which the " index numbers" are derived.
