OTHER INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
The crude mortality was 0.23 per 1,000 persons, or 0.04 above the mean rate (Table 10),
higher rates being recorded in the Metropolis and Willesden (0.26 in each case). The
corrected mortality (0.29) was 0.6 in excess of the mean (Table 27), and was exceeded by the
rate in Kensington (0.30) only. The nett mortality rates for the Wards are given in Table 28.
OTHER INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
In addition to measles and whooping cough, german measles, mumps and ringworm are
reported to the Department by the Staffs of the Public Elementary Schools. Last year
10 cases of german measles, 344 of chickenpox (corrected total 338), 176 of ringworm, and
420 of mumps were so reported.
In the weekly tabulation of the cases german measles is not distinguished from measles,
owing to the frequency with which the two diseases are confused by unprofessional persons.
The quarterly totals of the other diseases are given below. The only death from any
of these causes was that of a male, aged 25-35 vears, from mumps.

OTHER DISEASES.
The mortality rates from the remaining diseases which are selected for special tabulation
are given in Table 31. Increased mortalities from epidemic influenza (rate, 1909, 0.46 per
1,000; mean, 0.31), respiratory disease—bronchitis and pneumonia—(rate, 1909, 2.44; mean,
2.18), and suicide (rate, 1909, 0.14; mean, 0.09) were recorded. The mortality from alcoholic
excess—the sum of the mortalities from alcoholism (acute and chronic) and cirrhosis of the
liver—showed a satisfactory decrease from a mean rate of 0.24 to a rate of 0.12 for last year.
