TUBERCULOUS DISEASES. 21
During 1908, 23 outbreaks, in 14 stables, were reported in the Borough, and 11 outbreaks,
an the same number of stables, during the past year.
Anthrax, Hydrophobia.—Cases of these diseases occurring in man became notifiable by the
Order of the County Council of April last, already mentioned. No cases have as yet been
reported.
TUBERCULOUS DISEASES.
The deaths from the various forms of tuberculosis numbered 204 during the past year,
being 14 more than in 1908, but 15 less than in 1907. Last year's total included 161 deaths
from pulmonary tuberculosis (consumption), 17 from cerebral (tubercular meningitis), 8 from
abdominal (tabes mesenterica), 12 from generalised, and 6 from other forms of the disease.
(Table 17.) The total mortality was at the rate of 1.34 per 1,000 persons last year, or 0.03
less than the mean rate for the five years 1904-08; but while the rate for females shows
a decrease from 0.95 (mean rate) to 0.91, that for males shows an increase of 0.07, from 1.85
to 1.92. The mortality from consumption was 1.06, or 0.04 above the mean, the greater part
of the increase falling upon males. The combined mortality from the other forms of
tuberculosis was 0.28 last year, as compared with a mean rate of 0.35, the rate for females
(0.20) showing a much greater shrinkage (0.16) than that for males (rate, 0.40, decrease, 0.01).
The Registrar-General (Table 10) gives last year's rate from consumption as 1.08, the same
as the mean rate, which rate was exceeded by those for Westminster (1.34) and Marylebone
(1.35) only. In every case last year's rates show decreases, in comparison with the mean
rates. The local rate from other tuberculous diseases (0.28) was lower than those in the other
districts except Marylebone (0.16) and Hampstead (0.23). In Willesden only was last year's
rate (0.40) in excess of the mean (0.31).

The corrected mortality rate from pulmonary tuberculosis for the Borough (Table 19)
was 1.02 in 1909, as compared with a mean rate of 1.04, that rate being exceeded by those of
Westminster (1.18) and Marylebone (1.25) only.
The deaths from these diseases in the individual Wards in the Borough were too few to
permit of any sub-division, except into "pulmonary" (consumption) and "other forms of
tuberculosis." (Table 18.) In Harrow Road, Maida Vale, and Westbourne Wards last
year's rates from pulmonary tuberculosis were above the mean rates, in the other Wards
below. The maximum rate was that in Church Ward (1.41) which, however, was 0.09 below
the mean (1.50). The rates from "other forms" of tuberculosis were below the means,
except in Maida Vale (increase 0.01) and Church (rate, equal to mean, 0.52).
