REPORT.
THE BOROUGH.
The area of the Borough, 1,356 acres, includes 20 acres of waterways and (approximately)
175 of open spaces. At the census of 1901 there were 17,684 inhabited houses
occupied by 33,661 families, 21,815 of the latter total living in homes of less than five rooms.
In 1891 16'7 per cent, of the inhabitants of the Parish, which did not include the present
Queen's Park Ward, were living in homes where the average number of occupants exceeded
two per room, who were, therefore, described as " overcrowded." Such designation is not,
however, taken to imply that those persons wereovercrow de dwithin the meaning of
the law. In 1901 the proportion had decreased to 13.5 per cent.
The Borough constitutes a single Registration District, comprising three Sub-Districts,
viz., North, Central and South Paddington. For administrative purposes, the Borough is
divided into eight Wards, viz., Queen's Park, Harrow Road and Maida Vale (constituting
the North Sub-District), Westbourne and Church (the Central Sub-District), Lancaster Gate,
East and West, and Hyde Park (forming the South Sub-District). In this Report the Wards
have been, in accordance with previous practice, selected as the unit areas.
POPULATION.
Assuming that the rate of increase in the population, as determined by the Census of
1891 and 1901, has been maintained, the number of inhabitants of the Borough at the middle
of last year is estimated to have been 151,437,. comprising 64,904 males and 86,553 females."
That estimate shows an increase of 7,461 persons above the total for the last Census, while
the natural increment of the population, being the excess of the births over the deaths
between April, 1901, and June of last year was 10,084. Changes due to migration cannot be
determined.
The estimates of the populations of the Wards of the Borough are given below :—
