Cowhouses. The four cowhouses in the Borough have
been visited on 9 occasions, and the required cleansing has
been duly enforced on 8 occasions.
Horse Slaughterer. The one horse-slaughtering house
in the Borough has been visited by the Inspector on 40 occasions,
and cleansing of the premises was required on three of these
visits.
Other Scheduled Offensive Trades. The 63 other
premises where these offensive trades are carried on, notably
within the precincts of the Foreign Animals' Wharf, Deptford,
have been frequently visited, and the requirements of this
Authority have always immediately received attention. Considerable
works of redrainage of the Slaughter Houses, Tripe
Houses, &c., have been carried out during the year, and other
measures in connection with the methods of dealing with the
manure, offal, &c.
The majority of the businesses conducted on these premises
have been established for long periods of time, in fact, before the
passing of the Public Health (London) Act, 1891, and in that
way appear to be exempt from the provision of that Act
requiring that such businesses should only be carried on after
receiving the consent of the County Council so to do.
In the early part of the year the London County Council
communicated with this Council, alleging that complaints had
been made to them with respect to one of the businesses carried
on in these premises, namely, the Oleo Works, of the London
Butchers Hide and Skin Co. The spotless cleanliness and
freedom from any sort of offensive odour of these premises being
well known to this Department, this complaint occasioned
