length, and eventually in the early part of this year (1909), it
was resolved to adopt the Act.
DEATHS.
The total number of deaths registered during 1908 was
1,377, of which 720 were males, and 657 females. The crude
death rate for the Borough of 12.42 per 1,000, compares favourably
with 13.8, the death rate for the County of London, and 14.7
the death rate for the 76 large towns.
In the County of London the lowest crude death rates
amongst the various Metropolitan Boroughs were 8.5 in
Hampstead, 11.0 in Lewisham, 11.4 in Woolwich, 11.6 in
Wandsworth, 12.2 in Battersea, 12.3 in Stoke Newington, 12.4
in Paddington, Fulham, and Greenwich, and 12.6 in City of
Westminster; while the highest rates were 17.1 in Bethnal Green,
17.4 in Shoreditch, 17.7 in City of London, 18.6 in Finsbury,
and 18.8 in Bermondsey.
Locally, the death rate varied from 3.93 in Kidbrooke, 11.96
in Charlton, 12.05 in East Greenwich, and 13.37 in West Greenwich,
to 16.53 in St. Nicholas.
