Factories.—During the year 28 factories were inspected by the
officers of the Public Health Department; six being factory
laundries, and twenty-two factories in which articles of clothing &c.,
were made and altered.

In four factories the sanitary accommodation was defective or unsuitable.

Workshops.—The number of workshops registered in Hackney
at the end of 1911 was 1,069, an increase of 30 over the number
registered at the end of 1910. Of this total 823 were workshops
in which females were employed. Of these latter, 607 were workshops
in which articles of wearing apparel were manufactured,
altered or prepared for sale, &c., 174 in which other articles were
manufactured, and 42 were domestic workshops.
Amongst the workshops manufacturing wearing apparel there
were 4C3 employing female labour alone, and 144 employing
both male and female labour.
In workshops of other occupations there were 111 employing
females alone and 63 employing both males and females.
Of the domestic workshops, females were employed in 28 alone,
and both males and females in 14.
Thus in the total number of workshops registered in the
Borough 602 employed female labour alone, 221 both male and
female labour, and 246 male labour alone.
During the year notices and complaints were received from
H.M. Inspectors of Factories as follows :—
