Report on the sanitary condition of the Hackney District for the year 1911

Puerperal Fever.—There were 16 cases of puerperal fever
notified during 1911, of which 6 were removed to the infirmary.
The deaths from this disease numbered 4. The attack rate for the
year was 3 0 per 1,000 births, and the death rate .74 per 1,000
births.
Plague.— No case of plague was notified in the Borough of
Hackney during last year.
Erysipelas.—There were 358 cases of Erysipelas notified during
1911. This is equivalent to an attack rate of 1.6 per 1,000 living.
Of the 358 cases notified, 88 were removed to hospital. There
were 18 deaths from this disease during the year, which gives a
mortality rate of 5 per cent. attacked, and .08 per 1,000 living.

Polio-myelitis or Polio-encephalitis.—This disease was added to
the list of notifiable diseases by the London County Council, with
the approval of the Local Government Board, at a meeting held on
the 25th July, 1911. The Order made is in the following terms:—
"The London County Council hereby Resolves and Orders
that Section 55 of the Public Health (London) Act, 1891, with
respect to the notification of infectious disease shall apply in
the Admininistrative County of London up to and including
the 12th day of March, 1912, to the disease known as Acute
Polio-myelitis or Acute Polio-encephalitis.
The Order came into operation on the 1st September, 1911.
