per 1,000 living. The mortality rate for London from scarlet fever
during 1911 was .04 per 1,000 living.
Diphtheria and Membranous Croup.—There were 316 cases of
diphtheria and membranous croup notified during 1911, but of these
32 were afterwards found not to be genuine diphtheritic cases, thus
reducing the genuine cases of this disease occurring in the Borough
to 284. This is an increase of 129 upon the number which occurred
in the Borough during 1910. The chart shows the disease to have
been prevalent all the year, the incidence, however, being low,
except during the months of October and December, when there
were increases in the numbers notified, but the disease again
declined during the last three weeks of the year.
There were 276 cases of diphtheria and membranous croup
removed to hospital during 1911. This is equal 87 per cent. of the
total notified.

The following table shows the distribution of the cases of this disease in the different sub-districts of the Borough during 1911:—

Sub-Districts.North.Central.South-West.South-East.
No. of Cases of Diphtheria and Membranous Croup.75609091
Total attack rate per 1,000.1.31.11.51.6

From the above it will be noted that this disease was most
prevalent in the south-west and south-east sub-districts and least
prevalent in the central sub-district.
The deaths from diphtheria and membranous croup during the
year numbered 21. This is equivalent to a death rate of 7.6 per
cent. attacked and .09 per 1,000 living. The death rate from
diphtheria for London during the same period is .14 per 1,000 living.
