being vaccinated or re-vaccinated. I am informed that the Public
Vaccinator called at 39, Berkshire Road and at 100 and 101, Chapman
Road on the 28th, and offered vaccination and re-vaccination
to all of the inmates. In response to this offer the following vaccinations
took place, viz.:—
Primary Vaccinations (28th February)—
E. M. L., 100, Chapman Road.
F. E. L., 39, Berkshire Road.
J. L., 39, Berkshire Road.
Re-vaccination (Vaccinated in Infancy)—
E. B., 101, Chapman Road.
L. R. L., 39, Berkshire Road.
The Public Vaccinator made a house-to-house visitation of the
infected area and offered vaccination and re-vaccination to 180
persons, "the bulk of whom," he states, "refused altogether to
have vaccination." He further adds, "out of this number I vaccinated
primarily 12 and re-vaccinated 3."
2. Quarantine, (a) School Children.—On the same date
notices were sent to the Head Teacher of the schools attended by
the children from the infected homes in order that they should be
Excluded from school. Other children in the same schools, who
ivere even remotely thought to have been in contact with these
children, were also excluded. The parents of these children were
instructed not to allow their children to associate with others, but
to keep them at home until further notice.
(6) Adults.—As a rule, employers of labour will not allow
smallpox contacts to resume work until a certificate is received from
the Medical Officer of Health, stating that they may resume work.
Frequently such "contacts" are the chief suppport of their families,
and if they are deprived of work their wages also disappear, and their
families suffer. The result is that, as a rule, such families amongst
the working classes have to apply to the Relieving Officers for
assistance. Several of the adult contacts were in this position.
