SPECIAL REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH
ON THE RECENT OUTBREAK OF SMALLPOX IN
THE BOROUGH OF HACKNEY.
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Metropolitan Borough of Hackney.
Gentlemen,
In accordance with the request of the Local Government Board
I beg herewith to submit a report upon the cases of smallpox which
have recently occurred in the Borough of Hackney. These cases
were only three in number, but their interest centres not so much
in their number as in their possible relation to the larger and more
serious outbreak in the Borough of Stepney. The following are
particulars relating to each case:—
Case 1.—Mrs. L., 39, Berkshire Road, Hackney Wick, age 33
years, married and has six children, four of whom reside with her
at this address, the other two live with their aunt at 100, Chapman
Road. Four of these children go to school, and one, age 14 years,
works at Clarnico's, Hackney Wick ; the remaining child is an
infant in arms. Mrs. L.'s husband is a carman in casual employment
The family occupy three rooms in the house, the other rooms being
occupied by another family, consisting of a man and his wife with
four children. Mrs. L. was vaccinated in infancy and again about
the age of 10 years. She was notified as suffering from smallpox
on the 25th February, and was removed to hospital on that date.
Case 2.—Mrs. B., age 43 years, 101, Chapman Road, married
and has three children. Her husband works at Clarnico's, Hackney
Wick. One son is a tinsmith and works in the City, the other two
children go to school in the neighbourhood. The family occupy
three rooms in this house, one other room is occupied by a married
couple with no family, and two rooms at the top of the house are
occupied by a family consisting of a man and his wife and four
