THE SHELTER.
During 1911, there were 35 persons admitted to the Shelter
whilst their homes were being disinfected. This total consisted
of 11 men, 14 women and 10 children. This is an increase of
one person admitted during 1910. The cost of maintenance of the
35 persons thus admitted was £3 3s. Od. The average duration of
stay in the shelter was 1.4 days.
The table on page 104 gives further particulars relating to
these contacts. No expenses were incurred during the year in the
conveyance of persons to and from the shelter.
CLEANSING OF PERSONS ACT, 1897.
The facilities provided by the Hackney Borough Council under
the above Act for the cleansing of verminous persons, were taken
advantage of during the past year by 721 persons, who presented
themselves at the station for cleansing.
The following shows the number of baths given to persons affected with vermin since the baths were first provided:—

Of the total 721 baths given, 67 were sulphur baths for scabies
and 654 for pediculi.
Amongst the number presenting themselves for baths, the
great majority were children from the public elementary schools.
These numbered 544, an increase of 192 on the number cleansed
during 1910.
