As stated in similar circumstances last year, the
samples of "Milk and Water" were probably sold as such
owing to the vendor being suspicious of the Inspectors'
agents. These samples contained 18 and 27 per cent, of
added water respectively.
Three samples of milk were deficient in fat to so
slight an extent as not to warrant legal proceedings; the
vendors were cautioned.
In the undermentioned cases "legal" notice was
given at the time of sale, and no proceedings therefore
were possible: One margarine sold as butter, but in
stamped wrapper, and one sample of milk 22 per cent.
deficient in butter fat, which was sold under cover of a
protective notice which was displayed in the shop.
In one case the vendor of an adulterated sample of
milk appeared before the Committee and gave good proof
of having sold the milk in the same condition as it was
received; proceedings against the wholesale dealer were
pending, and the Committee exercised their discretionary
power and warned the retailer.
