Local Government Board,
Whitehall, S.W.
16th February, 1914.
Sir,
I am directed by the Local Government Board to
state that they have had under consideration the Report
made by their Inspector, Major Norton, after the Inquiry
held by him with reference to a representation made to
the London County Council, under Section 4 of the
Housing of the Working Classes Act, 1890, in respect of
an area known as the Brady Street area and situate in
the Metropolitan Borough of Bethnal Green.
The Board understand that the County Council are
prepared to consider further the question of dealing with
the area referred to, though they are unwilling at present
to proceed by way of an improvement scheme under
Part I. of the Act of 1890.
Under the circumstances the Board would desire to
defer for the present coming to any formal decision
under Section 10 of the Act of 1890, and Section 4 of the
Act of 1903, and they would suggest that the County
Council should consider to what extent the matter might
properly be dealt with by means of a scheme or schemes
under Part II. of the Housing of the Working Classes
Act, 1890. The Board are advised that the following
areas might be considered in this connection, viz:—
(1) The area comprising the houses in
Neath Place ; the houses Nos. 10, 12 and 14 Tapp
Street; the houses Nos. 126 to 140 fronting Brady
Street; and, unless they can be and are to be dealt
with under Sections 17 and 18 of the Housing,
Town Planning, etc., Act 1909, the houses on the
south side of Somerford Street.
(2) The area comprising the houses on the
south sides of Scott Street and Dixie Street.
