Factories, Workshops, Workplaces and Outworkers.
These premises were regularly visited during the year. Special
attention was paid to sanitary accommodation for persons employed.
In one instance the W.C. accommodation was found to be insufficient
for the persons employed, and in 34 cases the accommodation was
unsuitable or defective.
In each instance the defect was remedied before the expiration of
the year.
The registers dealing with the above have been kept well up-to-date,
as will be gathered by the perusal of the following paragraphs relating
to the various classes of premises coming within the scope of the
Factory and Workshop Act.
FACTORIES.
Factories include all places in which mechanical power is used in
aid of the manufacturing processes.
The number of factories on the register at the end of the year,
including bakehouses and laundries, was 132, involving 281 rooms.
188 inspections were made and 12 notices served.
WORKSHOPS.
Workshops include any premises (not being factories) in which
manual labour is exercised by way of trade, or for purposes of gain
in, or incidental to, the making, altering, repairing, finishing or
adapting for sale of any article, and to or over which the employer of
the persons working there has the right of access or control.
The number of workshops on the register at the end of the year
was 249 (including bakehouses and laundries and domestic workshops)
with 405 rooms.
