413 notifications were received during the year 1912,
relating to 406 cases. Of these, 17 cases were errors in
diagnosis and cases which occurred in hospital, thus reducing
the net number of cases to 389.
The number of cases for 1912 was in excess of that in
the previous year, but nevertheless the death rate this year
was lower, indicating a milder type of the disease. During the
previous three years 369, 300 and 373 were notified respectively.
The deaths were 6, compared with 7, 3 and 13 in the three
preceding years.
The death-rate was 0.05 per 1,000, and for the three preceding
years 0.06, 0.03 and O.ll respectively.
The rate of mortality for England and Wales was 0.05, for
the 93 great towns 0.06, for the 136 smaller towns 0.05, for the
County of London 0.04 per 1,000.
During the first quarter of the year only 108 cases were
notified, during the second quarter 104, the third quarter 69,
but during the last quarter there were 125.
Over 85 per cent, of these cases were removed to hospital,
and previous records show that the percentage of deaths is
much lower if the patient is treated in hospital than if nursed
at home.
