paving rounded to the walls instead of ordinary flooring covered
with linoleum cannot be over estimated. Where floor boards in
a good condition exist as they did in our case, then one of the
various trade preparations, which form an impervious stratum
over the board may be used. A layer of sawdust ¾-inch thick
mixed with silica solution, followed in a few days by a layer of
finely powdered red earth, fine sawdust, and a solution of silica put
on as cement would be laid, makes a splendid coloured flooring.
This sets to form a hard concrete mass which is at the same
time a quiet, smooth and elastic surface upon which to tread.
Very little is needed in the way of furniture. A number
of chairs and a table are all that are needed in the waiting rooms,
chairs, table, cupboard, wash basin, etc., will suffice for the
nurse's room, and one or two revolving stools, a writing desk,
instrument cabinet, table and wash basin will generally be
found sufficient for the doctor's room.
There will also be special articles required, such as a
weighing machine, instruments for the doctor's rooms and
laboratory, and a few fittings for the dispensary. If convenience
permits it is a great help to the efficient working of the Dispensary
if the building contains sufficient rooms to allow one or
more observation beds to be placed and used therein. It is
often found that there are cases of Tuberculosis which one
would like to observe daily for a time, especially during the
commencement of injections of Tuberculin.
tuberculosis notification.
The compulsory notification of tubercular diseases has
been progressive, and has come about in the following stages:
In 1909, the Public Health (Tuberculosis) Regulations,
1908, came into operation. They required cases of Pulmonary
Tuberculosis coming under the notice of the following Poor
Law Officers in discharge of their respective duties, to be
notified to the Medical Officer of Health within 48 hours.
