a diminishing lesion. All of these are treated at the Dispensary
according to their needs. The majority of such patients are
injected with one or other of the different forms of Tuberculin
by the intensive method, leading eventually to cure or arrest in
a large number of the cases. To those patients who will not
tolerate Tuberculin, some are given medicinal treatment either
by mouth, or by inhalation, or by both, whilst others are advised
to take a complete rest (i.e., lying in bed and remaining absolutely
quiet) either at their home or at a Sanatorium, with a
view to preparation for a course of Tuberculin at a Dispensary.
Cases in the late stage are sent to an institution where under
suitable regime they will be cared for and prevented from
scattering infection to persons around them.
TUBERCULIN TREATMENT.
It is agreed now-a-days by most medical men that to cure
or arrest a case of Tuberculosis some method of immunisation
is necessary. Some persons possess what is called natural
immunity to such an extent that they are able to withstand
the attacks of the tubercle bacillus throughout their lives and
never become manifestly infected. Others possess such a
degree of immunity that they retain their health only while
placed under favorable conditions, but when they are exposed
to attacks of the tubercle bacillus under bad and insanitary
conditions of living they will eventually succumb unless rescued
therefrom. Yet again some people acquire immunity either
in the active sense or the passive sense, and it is with acquired
active immunity that we have mainly to deal as a cause in
bringing about cures or arrests in cases of Tuberculosis.
Injection of Tuberculin appeals to scientific minds as
furnishing the most rational mode of bringing about immunisation,
and if the right method of injection be used and
suitable cases selected, some surprising results are obtained.
At the same time, if tuberculin is not to fall into unmerited
