The cases occurred in the following Wards, one in No. 2(Belsize)
Ward, one in No. 4(Central) Ward, two in No. 5(West End) Ward,
one in No. 6(Kilburn) Ward, and one in No. 7(Priory) Ward.
Erysipelas.
Forty-nine cases were notified, and 2 deaths occurred, as compared
with 32 cases and 1 death in 1910.
The attack-rate per 1000 of the population was 0.57.
Of the cases notified, 7, or 14 per cent., were removed to the
Hampstead Workhouse Infirmary.
The Metropolitan Asylums Board do not provide hospital accommodation
for cases of erysipelas or puerperal fever, and the patients
suffering from these diseases are unable to obtain hospital treatment
except in Poor Law Infirmaries or Workhouses.
Polio-Myelitis.
This disease, which is popularly known as "Infantile Paralysis,"
became prevalent in Devonshire and Cornwall during the summer of
1911, and attracted considerable attention. The disease was made
notifiable in a considerable number of districts, and in August the
London County Council made an order making it notifiable in the
County of London from September 1st, 1911, to March 12th, 1912.
During the present year the County Council have made another order
making Polio-Myelitis permanently notifiable in London. There is
considerable evidence to show that the disease is communicable, but it
is by no means clear how the infection is communicated. Six cases
were notified during the year and one death occurred. Disinfection
was carried out in each case
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.
The London County Council made an Order, which came into
operation on March 13th, requiring the notification of Ophthalmia
Neonatorum. This disease is one of the frequent causes of blindness,
and therefore inflicts considerable loss on the community. Five cases
were notified in Hampstead during the year, all of which occurred in
the Kilburn Ward. In order to prevent the disease resulting in loss
of eyesight it is necessary that the patient should be properly nursed,
