Notification of Births Act—Prevention of Infant
Mortality.
3,099 notifications of living and 71 of still-born
children were received under the above Act, 77 per
cent, of the births registered in the borough being
notified. Of these 2,025 or 63.9 per cent, were notified
by midwives, 976 or 30.8 percent, by medical practitioners
and 169 or 5.3 per cent, by the fathers or some other
relative. I regret again to have to point out that the
Council still decline to avail themselves fully of the
information obtained under this Act by refusing to
appoint a Health Visitor, who could devote her whole
time to visiting mothers and giving advice as to the
proper care and management of babies, a step again
urged without success in a report presented to the Public
Health Committee last summer which has been advocated
by the Local Government Board and has been uniformly
