INQUESTS AND MORTUARY.
During the year 592 bodies were received into the Mortuary, as compared
with an average of 681 in the preceding 10 years. This is, with one exception,
viz., 563 in 1908, the smallest number recorded in these years.
The daily average number of bodies received into the mortuary was 1.6,
as compared with 1.5 in 1908.

In 407 cases inquests were held, as contrasted with an average of 434 in the years 1899-1908.

During the year the mortuary keeper's cottage, which had become damp
and unfit for occupation, was pulled down, and a new one built on its site.
The cottage, which had previously been rented, was purchased together with
the site, and the new building was erected by the Council.
