Many of these are doubtless due to exposure, but some are due
to infection as well.
In 68 cases the children were under one year, in 126 cases the
children were under 5 years of ape. In these children the
pneumonia probably occurred after an attack of measles and
hooping cough—both of which leave in their train a distinct
susceptibility to pneumonia and lung affections.
In addition to the deaths given above there were 228 deaths
due to consumption of the lungs, so that altogether there were
669 deaths—over one-third of the total due to lung affections.
ALCOHOLISM.
It is quite rare to find alcoholism on a death certificate save in
the case of the homeless, the destitute, or persons dying in poor
law institutions. It is oftenest veiled under the term Cirrhosis
of the Liver.

The deaths from both these are appended:—
