It will be seen that 571 deaths, that is 34 per cent. or nearly
one-third of the total number, occurred in the Workhouse or
Workhouse Infirmary.
This gives some index of the poverty which prevails among
many inhabitants of the district.
Of the deaths, 417, or 22 per cent., were 65 years of age or
over 65 at the time of death.
The following table gives the numbers of deaths that have
occurred in public institutions since 1901:—
TABLE E
Total Deaths. | Deaths in Public Institutions, &c., outside District belonging to Finsbury. | Percentage. | |
---|---|---|---|
1901 | 2,161 | 876 | 40.5 |
1902 | 2,283 | 908 | 39.8 |
1,993 | 870 | 43.6 | |
1904 | 2,084 | 965 | 46.3 |
1905 | 1,855 | 886 | 47.8 |
1906 | 2,020 | 1,020 | 50.5 |
1907 | 1,774 | 911 | 51.3 |
1908 | 1,767 | 891 | 50.4 |
1909 | 1,814 | 988 | 54.4 |
It will be seen that the percentage of deaths which occur in
public institutions, including poor law institutions, is gradually
and with slight intermissions continuously increasing.
This, again, would support the belief that the inhabitants of
the district are now generally poorer than they were years ago.
