ICE CREAM.
There are in Finsbury 82 shops in which ice cream is sold.
These are all registered, and their premises periodically inspected.
The materials commonly used are milk, eggs, granulated sugar,
cornflour, vanilla or lemon flavouring, and some colouring agent.
Fruit pulp is used in only a very few establishments.
By the London County Council (General Powers) Act, 1902,
itinerant ice cream vendors must have the name and address of
the ice cream manufacturer prominently displayed on their
barrows.
It was not found necessary to take legal proceedings for this
omission.
BUTTER AND MARGARINE.
Since 1908 wholesale dealers in and manufacturers of butter
and milk-blended butter must be registered with the local authority.
Margarine dealers and manufacturers have also to be
registered in accordance with the Margarine Act, 1887, Section 9,
and the Sale of Food and Drugs Act, 1889, Section 7, subsection
4.
In 1909 one butter manufacturer was registered, and the name
of one was removed, leaving seven names still on the register.
The name of one wholesale dealer in margarine was placed on
the register, which now contains 20.
The samples of butter taken during the year were 77, of which
10 were found adulterated; 46 samples of margarine were
obtained, all genuine.
