The effect of the provision of work through the medium of the
Distress Committee has been that it has enabled applicants to keep
their homes together and redeem many articles they had to pledge
in time of need, and helped them over a period of depression until
they obtained work on their own account. It has benefitted them
considerably in health by their being able to obtain sufficient food,
and in the case of the Labour Colonies by their living in the country
air. In some instances it has put hope and energy into those who
were downcast and depressed when without work.
