The result of proceedings in respect of one of these cases
was that a conviction was obtained, and a penalty of £4 14s. 6d.
inflicted by the magistrate. The remaining cases were adjourned
sine die.
In connection with the adulteration of sausages by means of
added preservatives, an appeal from the decision of the magistrate
(Mr. Mead), at Marylebone Police Court, who convicted
and fined, under Sec. 6, Sale of Food and Drugs Act, the defendant,
a sausage manufacturer, for selling sausages containing
22.4 grains of boric acid, was heard at the Quarter Sessions, and
the decision of the magistrate, upheld by Mr. Wallace, K.C.,
Chairman of the Quarter Session, before whom the appeal was
heard, who held that the sausages were sold to the prejudice of
the purchaser, that they contained something which was not
of the nature, substance and quality demanded by the purchaser,
and with regard to the provision in the section as to the addition of
matter necessary for preservation, that it was not matter or
ingredient that was required for the purpose, and that
it was, therefore, prejudicial to the purchaser. The case is
important having regard to the action taken by Battersea Borough
Council in similar circumstances.
Coffee and Cocoa.
Thirty-nine samples of coffee were taken and submitted for
