THE SHELTER.
During the year 1909, there were only 33 persons admitted to
the Shelter whilst their homes were being disinfected. This total
consisted of 8 men, .12 women and 13 children. This shows
a decrease of 54 persons on the number admitted during 1908.
The cost of maintenance for the 33 persons admitted last year
was £4 8s. 9d. The average duration of stay in the shelter was
2.1 days.
The table on page 94 gives further particulars relating to
these contacts. No expenses were incurred in the conveyance of
persons to and fiom the shelter during last year.
CLEANSING OF PERSONS ACT, 1897.
The facilities afforded by the Borough Council under the above
Act for the cleansing of verminous persons were taken advantage
of during 1909 to such an extent that 667 persons presented themselves
at the station for cleansing.
The following shows the number of baths given to persons affected with vermin since the baths were instituted.

Of the total 667 baths given, 49 were sulphur baths for scabies
and 618 for pediculi.
Amongst the number presenting themselves for baths, the
great majority were children from the public elementary schools.
They amounted to a total of 490, a slight excess above the number
of children cleansed during 1908.
