Factories—In the year 1909 there were 51 factories visited
and inspected; of these 5 were laundries and 46 were factories
in which articles of clothing, etc., were made or altered.

In 10 factories the sanitary conveniences were found unsuitable or defective, in two factories insufficient.

Workshops.—The number of workshops registered in the
Borough of Hackney at the end of 1909 was 1,051, an increase
of 61 upon the number registered at the end of 1908. Of the
above total, 721 are workshops in which articles of wearing
apparel are manufactured, altered, or prepared for sale, etc., and
330 in which other articles are manufactured, etc. Below is
given a list of these two classes of workshops and the occupations
carried on therein.
Amongst the workshops manufacturing wearing apparel,
there are 511 in which female labour alone is employed, 163 in
which both male and female labour is employed, and 47 in which
male labour alone is employed. There are 68 domestic workshops
registered in the Borough, in 47 of which females alone
are employed, and in 21 both males and females.
In workshops and places of other occupations, females alone
are employed in 108, both sexes in 87, and males alone in 135.
Thus in the total number of workshops and workplaces
registered in the Borough, females alone are employed in 619,
both sexes in 250, and males alone in 182.
