The death rate from cancer for all London for the year 1909 is
.96 per 1,000 persons living.
ALCOHOLISM.
During 1909 there were 4 deaths registered as due to acute
alcoholic poisoning. In addition there were 28 deaths due to
cirrhosis of the liver, a condition caused as a rule by excessive
indulgence in alcohol, extending over considerable periods.
VACCINATION.
The following is a summary of the returns made by the
Vaccination Officers respecting the vaccination of children whose
births were registered in Hackney from the 1st January to 30th
June, 1909, with supplementary figures for the year 1908. During
the year 1908 there were 5,676 births in the Borough, of which
3,323 appear to have been successfully vaccinated. This amounts
to 58.5 per cent. of the total births. During the same period
there were 636 certificates of conscientious objections received, and
during the year 1909 the statutory declarations of conscientious
objection to vaccination which were received, numbered 842.
