The mortality for London for the same disease during the same
period is .08 per 1,000 persons living.
Diphtheria and Membranous Croup.—There were 267 cases of
diphtheria and membranous croup notified during 1909, but of these
38 cases were subsequently found not to be suffering from this
disease, so that the genuine cases of diphtheria and membranous
croup occurring in the Borough during the above period was 229.
This is a decrease of 122 cases upon the number of genuine cases
notified during 1908, and is equivalent to an attack rate of 0.9 per
1,000 persons living.
As will be seen from the chart the incidence of the disease was
abnormally low during the whole year, the average per week being
only 44. The number of cases removed to hospital was 227. This
is equal to 85 per cent. of the cases notified.

The following table shows the distribution of the cases of this disease in the different sub-districts of the Borough during 1909:-

Sub-Districts.North.Central.South-West.South-East.
No. of Cases of Diphtheria and Membranous Croup.42716787
Total attack rate per 1,000..761.21.11.3

It will be noted from the above that the disease was more
prevalent in the Central and South-East sub-districts than in the
North.
The deaths from diphtheria and membranous croup during the
year numbered 19. This is equivalent to a mortality rate of 8.3 per
1,000 attacked, and .08 per 1,000 persons living.
