11 years, went to bed last night without supper, they have had
very little to-day.
19. Spring Hill District (near River Lea and Middlesex
Wharf).—The dilapidated condition of this property is well
known. It is doubtful whether the houses could be made truly
desirable habitations, as proximity to the river and the flooding
that can only be avoided by re-embankment, makes dampness a
chronic condition of the houses at the foot of the hill. The
houses generally are in need of much internal and external repair.
The roadway at Middlesex Wharf near Lea Bridge Road
is an abomination on wet days.
