were submitted to the Clinical Research Association at
the request of medical practitioners; in twenty-five

ENTERIC FEVER.
Deaths 18. (Decennial average 12).
Enteric Fever was prevalent in East London during
the Autumn, and the visitation was specially severe in
Bethnal Green. A total of 108 persons were notified
as suffering from this disease. Sixty-three of the
patients were removed to Asylums Board Hospitals,
thirty-six were treated in general hospitals, and nine
remained at home, where six of them died. Twelve of
the hospital patients also died, a case mortality on the
admissions of 15.5 per cent. as against 11.9 amongst
the whole of the patients under treatment in the
Asylums Board Hospitals in 1909-1910. The Enteric
Fever mortality in Bethnal Green, calculated upon the
estimated population, was 0.14 as against 0.04 for the
County of London.
The sanitary condition of the houses from which the
Enteric Fever patients were removed was fairly good;
in five the W.C. or the apparatus connected therewith,
was found to be defective; in seven others the drains
were leaky, and minor insanitary defects were found in
twenty-eight. Ten patients were removed from single
room tenements, one of which was overcrowded.
