The first two cases of Diphtheria in "The
Home" occurred on the 13th November last, I
saw them first on Saturday, the 12th November,
they had ulcerated throats, but nothing characteristic.
On Sunday, the 13th November, the
Diphtheritic Symptoms had developed very rapidly
and the cases were sent to the Fever Hospital
with as little delay as possible, so that they might
have the benefit of the Anti-toxin injection at
once, as I had none by me and could not get it on
Sunday at a short notice. Both these two died,
one on the 13th November, and the other on the
22nd November. They were from two of the
Houses in the First Group.
The third case was on the 19th November,
also from a House in the First Group.
The fourth, fifth and sixth cases were on 20th
November, two from First Group, and one from
Third Group, i.e., the Receiving House.
The seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth cases
occurred respectively on the 21st, 23rd and 29th
November, and 18th December, all from the last
mentioned (Receiving) House.
In every suspicious case that occurred (except
the first two) a swab was immediately taken, and an
Anti-toxin Injection given; and Patient and House
completely isolated. In some bad cases the swab
was repeated three or four times, and the Injection
twice. When the result of a swab was positive the
Patient was removed to the Fever Hospital within
